Nuestra reunión el día de hoy, el 9 de julio de 2011 fué nuestra primera reunión del nuevo año fiscal (2011), y nos pasamos de maravilla. Nuestro tema era “La Natación” y nuestra palabra del día era “Piscina.” Felicidades a Ken Oehlkers por ser nuestro ”Toastmaster de la Mañana” y a Julián Hernández por ser nuestro ”Evaluador General.” Vanessa Reyes hizo un buen trabajo como nuestra directora de temas de mesa y Alice Broquist manejó bien el reloj para nosotros. Como invitado tuvimos de nuevo a Wilmer Izquierdo, miembro de Union City Toastmasters.
Cathy Wiegand hizo su discurso, “El Club de Mis Sueños” y ofreció trozitos de sus dulces ”Twizzlers” con todos los colores del arcoiris para simbolizar el progreso de cada uno de nuestros miembros. Cecilio Wilson, nuestro nuevo presidente hizo su brindis al club y ofreció jugo (o zumo) de naranja a su audiencia. Entonces en cierto modo, comimos, y bebimos en nuestro año nuevo con muchas esperanzas para el “nuevo” año.
We had a great meeting last Saturday, July 9, 2011 to kick off the new fiscal year. Our theme was “Swimming” and our word of the day translates to “(swimming) pool.” Congratulations to Ken Oehlkers for being our Toastmaster of the Morning and to Julian Hernandez for being our General Evaluator. Vanessa Reyes did a great job as Table Topics Master and Alice Broquist kept our meeting on time. Wilmer Izquierdo, of Union City Toastmasters was our returning guest.
Cathy Wiegand gave a speech that translates to “The Club of Her Dreams.” and she offered each member of the audience a strip of one of her rainbow colored ”Twizzlers” to represent our development for this new year in Toastmasters en Español. Also, together with our new president, Cecilio Wilson we toasted to the new year with orange juice. So we ate, drank and had a great time with high hopes for the new fiscal year.

Los Clubes Toastmasters en Español y Union City Toastmasters fueron invitados por la Oficina del Comisionado Lucio P. Fernandez del Departamento de Asuntos Públicos, a la Celebración de la Independencia que tuvo lugar el pasado jueves 30 de junio a lo largo de la Calle 43 (Celia Cruz Way) entre las Avenidas New York y Hudson en Union City. Los clubes también han sido invitados a dos eventos más durante este verano. Aquí van algunas fotos de esta actividad. Toastmasters en Español and Union City Toastmasters Clubs were invited by the office of Commissioner Lucio P. Fernandez, Department of Public Affairs, to participate in the Independence Day Celebration. The event took place last Thursday, June 30 along 43rd St. (Celia Cruz Way) between New York and Hudson Avenues. The clubs were also invited to two more City events this summer. Here are some photos of this activity. The clubs are grateful to members that made this very important public relations event a success.

Toastmasters en Español celebró su séptimo aniversario el pasado sábado, 25 de junio junto con su club hermano, Union City Toastmasters, el cual celebró su octavo aniversario. Los clubes fueron incorparados en junio de 2004 y 2003, respectivamente. El festejo tuvo lugar en Union City Cafetería La Churrería en la Avenida Bergenline.
Los anfitriones del evento fueron Cathy Wiegand, CC, Presidenta de Toastmasters en Español y Julian Hernandez, DTM, el fundador de ambos clubes y Presidente de Union City Toastmasters. Cathy con su teclado introdujo la canción con la cual el club Toastmasetrs en Español comienza y termina sus reuniones:
“¡Somos los Toastmasters en Español!. Salimos de la concha del caracol. Hacemos todo esto sin alcohol. ¡Somos los Toastmasters en Español!”.
El Brindis lo ofreció Brad Shilling, DTM, PDG, socio fundador de Toastmasters en Español y quien fuera gobernador del distrito cuando el club se incorporó en el 2004. A continuación Ken Oehlkers, ACS, CL, miembro de Toastmasters en Español presentó un discurso de elogio humorístico a Cathy Wiegand la presidenta de ese club. Después Eliana Reyes, CC, miembro de Union City Toastmasters y la ganadora del primer lugar del concurso de evaluación del distrito 83 de este año, presentó un discurso de elogio humorístico a Julián Hernández, presidente del mismo club. El orador principal de la celebración fue Brian Lin, DTM, IPDG, quien inspiró a la audiencia con su presentación titulada Toastmasters y Tú.
Cuando se teminaron las presentaciones, que fueron en inglés mayormente pero en español también, y después de una demora muy larga, el camarero del restaurante Issac, hizo un trabajo muy bueno tomando las órdenes y los asistentes disfrutaron de una comida hispana que muchos comentaron lo esquisita que estaba.
Se debe reconocer a personas que no están en estas fotos porque tuvieron que irse temprano pero que asistieron a esta celebración, como Nick LoBue, DTM, PDG socio fundador de Toastmasters en Español, ex-presidente del club y quien fuera gobernador del distrito cuando el club Union City Toastmasters se fundó en el 2003 y Cecilio Wilson, ATMB ex-gobernador de division y el presidente electo de Toastmaster en Español.
La celebración fue todo un éxito. El comité de hospitalidad del evento lo intergraron Tanya Furusa, CC, Sargento de Armas y Wilmer Izquierdo, HCC, Sargento de Armas electo, ambos miembros de Union City Toastmasters. Ellos se encargaron de darles la bienvenida a los miembros e invitados, cobrar la cuota de la fiesta si no lo habían hecho ya y entregarles las etiquetas con los nombres de cada uno de ellos. Las etiquetas con los nombres fueron donadas por Lucy Kahn, ACS, CL, ”coach” de Union City Toastmasters y terminadas por Penelope Chambers, ACB, CL, presidente electa del mismo club. Penelope no pudo asistir por cuestiones de trabajo, pero se esmeró muchísimo para ayudar al éxito de la celebración trabajando detrás de las escenas.
Al terminar la celebración Cathy con su teclado de nuevo, dirigio al grupo para que cantara el “Happy Birthday”. Además de la celebración de aniversario los clubes estaban celebrando por anticipación el esperado reconocimiento de Toastmasters Internacional, para el fin del año fiscal que termina el 30 de junio. Toastmasters en Español y Union City Toastmasters proyectan alcanzar el galardón de Club Distginguido y Club Distinguido del Presidente (10 Perfect0), respectivamente. Manténgase en “sintonía” para conocer los resultados.

Toastmasters en Español celebrated its seventh anniversary last Saturday, June 25 with its sister club, Union City Toastmasters, which celebrated its eighth anniversary. The clubs were chartered in June 2004 and 2003, respectively. The celebration took place in Union City Cafetería La Churrería in Bergenline Avenue.
Cathy Wiegand, CC, President of Toastmasters en Español and Julian Hernandez, DTM, the founder of both clubs and President of Union City Toastmasters, were the hostess and host of the event. Cathy with her keyboard sang the song which all Toastmasters en Español meetings begin and end:
“We are the Toastmaters en Español! We get to venture out of our big snail shells. We do all this without alcohol. We are the Toastmasters en Español!
Brad Shilling, DTM, PDG, charter member of Toastmasters en Español and who was the district governor when the club was chartered in 2004 did the Toast. Then, Ken Oehlkers, ACS, CL, member of Toastmasters en Español presented a roast to Cathy Wiegand, president of that club. Later, Eliana Reyes, CC, member of Union City Toastmasters and the first place winner of the district 83 evaluation contest of this year, did a roast to Julian Hernandez, the president fo the same club. The keynote speaker was Brian Lin, DTM, IPDG, who inspired the audience with his presentation titled Toastmasters and You.
When all the presentations were finished and after a long wait, the waiter Issac did a very good job taking the orders and the attendees enjoyed the latin food which many commented that it was delicious.
It should be noted that people who are not in the photos because they had do leave early like; Nick LoBue, DTM, PDG, charter member of Toastmasters en Español, past president of the club and who was district governor when Union City Toastmasters Club was chartered in 2003; and Cecilio Wilson, ATMB, past division governor and president elect of Toastmasters en Español.
The celebration was a success. The hospitality committee was formed by Tanya Furusa, CC, Sergeant at Arms and Wilmer Izquierdo, HCC, Sergeant at Arms elect, both are members of Union City Toastmasters. They were in charge of welcoming members and guests, of collecting fees if they had not paid before and of handing the name tags. The name tags were donated by Lucy Kahn, ACS, CL, coach of Union City Toastmasters and completed by Penelope Chambers, ACB, CL, president elect of the same club. Penelope could not attend for work reasons, but she took great pains to contribute to the success of the celebration by working in the planning stage of the process.
At the end of the celebration Cathy with her keyboard lead the audience in singing “Happy Birthday”. In addition to the anniversary celebration the clubs were also celebrating ahead of time the recognition from Toastmasters International for the fiscal year ending June 30. Toastmasters en Español and Union City Toastmasters are proyecting to reach Distginguished Club and President’s Distinguishhed (Perfect 10) Awards, respectively.
